Introduction to Advocacy: For Yourself and Others

Friday March 8, 2019 • 12-1 PM, 2-139
What is advocacy, and how can you advocate for yourself and others? Join us for this short lunch session to workshop and learn how you can stand up for yourself and for others. We'll have pre-printed and blank affirmation cards for you (and art supplies to decorate!) to take home for yourself or remind your friends how worthy and wonderful you are. Cohosted with MechEREFS.

Maintaining Positive Morale: Professor Panel*

Wednesday March 13, 2019 • 3 - 4 PM, Amdur Room
What are positive and negative aspects of our department morale? What actions could we take to improve department morale and build a strong community? Come prepared with questions for our professor panel (Profs. Cathy Drennan, Mei Hong, and Tim Jamison) and use this opportunity to pick their brains about maintaining a positive morale during graduate school. Together, we'll brainstorm strategies to improve our MIT Chemistry community.

Convos & Cannolis: Sleep Better, Stress Less

Friday March 15, 2019 • 2 - 3 PM, 6-233
Join us in our regular collaboration between WIC and ChemREFS for Convos & Cannolis, an ongoing series where guest speakers are invited to discuss topics that affect you and the department. Our guest at this event will be Zan Barry from MIT Community Wellness, who will be leading a conversation on ways to sleep better and stress less. Cannolis provided (of course).

Healthy Eating & Meal Preparation

Friday March 22, 2019 • 1 - 2 PM, 18-578
We are what we eat--so how can we eat better? How does this tie into mental wellness? Learn about nutrition, eating well, and meal preparation from a certified nutritionist from DAPER--MIT's Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation. Healthy snacks provided.
Organizer: Jesse Gordon

Recognizing Signs of Distress

Friday March 29, 2019 • 2 - 3 PM, 4-159
How do you define a time of distress? How can you recognize distress in yourself and in your peers, and what can you do in these times for yourself and for others? Join us for an interactive workshop with Assistant Dean Jimmy Doan, a member of MIT's CARE (Coordination, Assistance, Response, and Education): a team of staff who support all students through challenges they may experience during their time at MIT. He will be joined by Assistant Dean Suraiya Baluch of the Office of Graduate Education.
Presenter: Jimmy Doan (Assistant Dean, CARE), Dr. Suraiya Baluch (Assistant Dean, OGE)

Staying Social in Graduate School

Date, time, and location TBD
Graduate school is tough on work-life balance, and often times the first thing cut from our busy, chaotic schedules is time for socializing. Why is it important that we maintain our relationships in graduate school, and how can we balance our social lives with all our other responsibilities?
